CHAPTER NINE

"Babe, I've got to work late tonight," Frank said.

Carol scowled at the phone. She knew he couldn't see it. She did it anyway. "Well, now whose work is keeping us apart?"

"Hey, I'm sorry, honey. I can't help it. The boss is staying, too. We have to re-work the annual budget. I don't know how late I'll be."

She didn't know why she got angry. The shoe was on the other foot, and it pinched. "I know you can't, dear," she said, her tone conciliatory. "I shouldn't blow up at you." She laughed softly. "That's how we got into swinging, isn't it? I'm going to get awfully lonely without you."

"Why don't you call Cynthia? I'm sure she and George would love to keep you entertained for a while. I'll join you if I finish here in time. Otherwise, I'll wake you when I get home."

"Oh, sure, I'll just call Cynthia and ask her if it's okay if I come over and fuck them."

"I thought you liked to swing."

"I do, darling," she replied. "Judy invited us to a pool party at her house Saturday night, and I can hardly wait for the time to pass. But I can't just call Cynthia out of the blue. I don't know her that well."

"We've got two different things going here. When did Judy invite us to a pool party?"

"She called a few minutes ago. I was going to tell you when you got home tonight."

"Okay. Now, about Cynthia and George. Why don't I call and ask Cynthia to come over and have coffee with you? If the two of you get along okay, you can go over there tonight."

"You really don't mind if I do it with them?" Carol said hesitantly. "When you're not there, I mean."

"I don't mind at all," Frank replied. "That's what swinging is all about, isn't it?"

"Not exactly. That's more like an open marriage, and I didn't agree to that."

"Well, don't worry about me screwing my boss. He's a man, and I like women."

"So do I," she giggled. "Are any of your pretty little secretaries going to be working with you?"

"Honey, there's only one pretty secretary in this place, and I don't think she would spread for a man if her life depended on it. She's totally into girls."

"Oh. Well, haven't you ever screwed an ugly girl? Don't you believe that old saying about all cats being gray in the dark?"

"Retract your claws," he laughed. "I certainly haven't screwed any ugly girls since I met you. Do you want me to call Cynthia or not?"

"Yeah, call her. It won't hurt to have coffee with her. I won't promise anything more."

"You don't have to promise anything, honey. I was just suggesting a way for you to have some fun and pass the time until I get home tonight. Make up your own mind what you want to do."

Carol made a pot of fresh coffee. She was sitting at the kitchen table when she heard a light tap on the back door. She opened the door and smiled.
